Teaser Trailer for Companion Movie Promises a Twisted Love Story

66 / 100
The teaser trailer for Companion movie, produced by Barbarian breakout director Zach Cregger and helmed by debut director Drew Hancock, begins by presenting itself as a millennial love story. Set to The Flamingos’ classic “I Only Have Eyes for You,” the trailer opens with text indicating the film is from “the studio that brought you The Notebook.” However, it quickly takes a darker turn.Sophie Thatcher, known for her role in Yellowjackets, stars as a woman seemingly being romanced at gunpoint by the enigmatic Jack Quaid. The trailer features intense scenes, including Thatcher chained to a chair while Quaid wines and dines her, and moments where she is pursued and dragged through a forest by the ankle. In a shocking display of defiance, she stabs an assailant in the neck and later holds her hand over a candle’s flame until her arm catches fire, all while staring intently at Quaid.

Initially, Cregger considered Companion as his follow-up to Barbarian, but the project ultimately became the directorial debut for Hancock, who wrote the screenplay. The film is produced by BoulderLight Pictures and was established under a first-look deal with New Line. Notably, New Line secured the project after winning a competitive auction for Weapons, the second feature from Cregger, which will also be produced by BoulderLight and Vertigo Entertainment. The production team includes BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz, Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Cregger, with Tracy Rosenblum from BoulderLight and Andrew Childs from Vertigo serving as executive producers.

The highly anticipated teaser trailer for Companion movie has just dropped, offering a tantalizing glimpse into a film that seems to start as a conventional millennial love story but quickly spirals into a dark and twisted narrative. Produced by Zach Cregger, who gained significant acclaim for his breakout horror film Barbarian, Companion is directed by newcomer Drew Hancock, marking his debut in the feature film arena.

Set against the backdrop of The Flamingos’ haunting classic “I Only Have Eyes for You,” the trailer opens with an inviting message that teases audiences, indicating the film is from “the studio that brought you The Notebook.” This initial sweetness sets the stage for an apparent romantic tale, but the atmosphere rapidly shifts as the story unfolds, subverting expectations with shocking visuals and unsettling themes.
