INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana is bracing for challenging weather conditions today, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph.
Morning Update
The remnants of Hurricane Helene have moved into central Indiana, bringing steady light showers to the central and southern regions of the state. Current temperatures are in the 60s, with winds beginning to pick up but not yet reaching their peak.
Friday Forecast
Rain coverage is expected to increase throughout the day, especially across central and southern Indiana. As the afternoon progresses, the intensity of the rain is forecasted to rise significantly.
The primary concern is the strong wind gusts expected later today and into the evening. A high wind warning has been issued for central Indiana, with wind advisories in effect for the surrounding areas. Gusts could reach up to 60 mph, leading to potential power outages during the latter part of the day.
Although the region has been relatively dry, there is a risk of localized flash flooding due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. Areas south of Interstate 70 may receive between one to three inches of rain, heightening the flood risk.
High temperatures are expected to reach the lower to mid-70s.
Overnight and Weekend Outlook
Rain, including heavy downpours, will persist overnight, with the Indianapolis metro area likely seeing an additional one to two inches of rainfall. Southern Indiana could experience even more, with totals ranging from two to three inches.
The remnants of Helene will continue to influence the weather over the weekend, bringing scattered showers and intermittent downpours. While most of the rainfall will be lighter and more sporadic on Saturday and Sunday, multiple rain chances are anticipated.
As we transition into the new work week, the upper-level low will gradually weaken. However, spotty showers may still occur on Monday and Tuesday, with high temperatures reaching the mid-70s. A cold front is expected to arrive on Tuesday evening, ushering in cooler temperatures, with highs around 70° for Wednesday and Thursday.
